Colorado State University’s business and economics programs rank in the top 15 percent of the world’s best universities for the quality of faculty research, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

CSU’s programs placed 76th out of the top 500 universities included in the rankings released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. The programs were ranked at 101 last year – the first year they appeared on the list – based on objective measures of faculty research.

“This ranking is recognition of the quality of the faculty at Colorado State University, and a remarkable accomplishment,” said Dan Ganster, associate dean of the College of Business. “I am extremely proud that a highly respected international publication compares our research efforts favorably with some of the best institutions of higher learning anywhere in the world. We are privileged to have educators of such caliber teaching and working at our University.”

Universities in 26 countries were evaluated in several broad subject fields: Natural Sciences and Mathematics; Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences; Life and Agricultural Sciences; Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy; and Social Sciences. The fields were further broken down into the subject areas of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Economics/Business. At Colorado State, the Department of Economics is part of the College of Liberal Arts.

More than 1,000 universities are actually ranked by ARWU every year and the best 500 are published on the website www.shanghairanking.com.

In the category of Economics/Business, the top 25 schools are all from the United States, with the exception of the UK’s Cambridge and Oxford universities; 121 of the top 200 are U.S. universities.

ARWU evaluates universities on research performance. The six objective indicators include the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific; number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science; number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index; and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution.

Other factors considered include percentage of graduate students; percentage of international students at the undergraduate, master’s, graduate and doctorate levels; number of doctorates award; and employment rate of degree recipients.

Colorado State has appeared in the overall rankings since 2003; in the Economics/Business category only since 2012. This year, the university’s Life and Agricultural Sciences fields were ranked in the top 10 percent, while Chemistry was in the top 15 percent in subject areas.
