Topic: Impact of Student Athlete Support on Academic Performance

Abstract:

Colorado State University employs full-time staff to offer support services based on the needs of the student athletes.  Support services range from group study hall sessions to one-on-one sessions with learning specialists.  This paper utilizes data from the Student Athlete Support Services (SASS) and Institutional Research to analyze the effect of these support services on student athletes’ academic performance on the extensive and intensive margin.  Throughout the analysis group variation exists across teams and the demographic groups that help to comprise each sport.  This paper follows a graduation cohort of student athletes from 2016-2021 to explore this variation and will employ the use of control groups to address the efficacy of the support services provided on various academic outcomes like credit completion, GPA, and academic probation.
