Reflections from a Summer Workawaying in Kenya

“I spent two and a half months travelling Kenya, staying and volunteering with several hosts in different regions from Lake Victoria to Mombasa. My goal was cultural exchange, story-collecting, learning new perspectives, experiencing relativization (in the sociological sense), meeting good people, and seeing great sights. I observed some vast differences in culture and economy in terms of collectivism, community, economic “development” and “modernization,” perceptions of the West, and concepts of the environment (especially relating to ontology and sacredness or lack thereof) and humans’ relationship with it. I hope folks will join me for a bit of storytelling and discussion of the former themes.”
