Professor Jianakoplos was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After graduating from Smith College, she worked as a research analyst and then as an economist in the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. She obtained her Ph.D. in Economics at The Ohio State University. She was a member of the faculty at Michigan State University before arriving at CSU in 1990. Her research interests include investigating the determinants of household wealth accumulation, gender differences in financial risk taking, and sports economics. She and her husband Jay enjoy golfing, traveling, and supporting the CSU Rams.
